Art and Design
Subject Coordinator - Mrs R Baxter
My interest in art and design started at a young age, when I recall spending endless hours practising doodling and drawing whenever I had some free time. I had a basic selection of mark making tools and I enjoyed exploring colours and techniques; finding lots of ways to use them. Secondary school provided lots of opportunities to try out new, often messy, aspects of art and design and I continue to explore different ways to express my ideas through painting, fluid art and lino cut printing. I like to use nature as an inspiration for my work and often take photos or collect objects when I’m out walking my dog. It was however at the age of 7, whilst on holiday in Scotland that I found what turned out to be my true passion. My family visited a pottery, and I had my first encounter with clay on a potter’s wheel. I was hooked! It was as an adult that I rekindled this interest, by joining evening classes to develop my skills further. I love building objects by hand, creating different shaped forms and seeing the transformation of the clay once it has been glazed and fired in the kiln!
As Art and Design lead, I want my enthusiasm and passion for art to inspire the pupils at Mablethorpe Primary Academy. My aim is to provide a range of creative opportunities for the children to explore, whilst developing the skills and techniques to express their thoughts and ideas and find their love of art. Alongside Art and Design lessons, children will have opportunities to be creative by joining The Art Club (various clubs will run throughout the year) and entering local community art competitions.
During our Art and Design lessons, we follow the Art and Design National Curriculum and we have used the termly inquiry questions as inspiration to explore different art forms and skills in the Wider Curriculum. The use of sketchbooks enables children to express their ideas, explore skills and techniques and reflect on their artwork at the end of a unit. Children will take inspiration from visiting artists and work collaboratively on pieces of art.
I am really looking forward to seeing all the original and creative ideas our children and staff have, as they express themselves on the Art and Design journey.
Subject Intent Statements:
Art and Design
We aim for our children to know more about art, be inspired to be creative, original and successful with their own art. We want art to be a form of self-expression, when other forms of communication may not come so easily and a means all children can explore the inner world of thoughts and feelings. We want children to observe and interpret their environment, as well as cultures and the wider world.
